Referee Information (Spring 2013)
  • Game Reports
    • A written game report must be sent to the head of officials (headofficial@calvertsoccer.org) if you eject any player, coach, or spectator or if you are informed by either coach that they are filing a protest.
  • Referee Abuse
    • If you feel intimidated or abused by any player or coach or spectator, even if you did not issue any cards, please notify the head of officials (headofficial@calvertsoccer.org) about the incident. People occasionally become irrational and overzealous. We need to be aware of these incidents and address the behavior. Your input is required and will be handled sensitively.  During the fall season most parks have a CCP&R field supervisor.  Seek them out during halftime or right after the game and let them know what has happened.  If the coach is not the one abusing you, let them know that the behavior of the player and/or spectator will not be tolerated and they are responsible for dealing with it.
  • 2 Person Mechanic
    • Each Referee has a whistle and the authority to call infractions and fouls anywhere on the field.  Official time and score are kept by one official (decide during pregame), with the other official serving as a fallback.
    • With the field divided in half down the center (picture an imaginary line passing through the center of each goal), each official is responsible for the touch line on their side of the field from end to end.  Signal balls out of bounds as an AR would and seek advice on last to touch from partner when necessary.  Stay as close to the touch line as possible when ball is on your side of the field and move toward center as ball goes to other side but do cross over to that side.
    • With the field divided in half at the center line, each official is responsible for making offside calls on their half of the field only.  They should move freely from the end line to the center line and only cross the center line if the play is concentrated in front of their partner deep on their partner’s side, and the partner may need help with infraction and foul calls.  When making a call from 30 or 40 yards away, it is important to "sell” the call by using a strong whistle and running toward the spot of the infraction/foul.
    • Corner Kicks on the official’s half of the field should be observed from the goal line, regardless of whether is on the official’s touch line or the opposite side of the goal.  The partner should close down to make it easier to observe rough play in front of the goal.  Be aware that many of the situations result in a "jailbreak” going the other way.
    • As in 3 person, officials should enter and exit the field together.
    • Any questions can be addressed to headofficial@calversoccer.org.
